Fix 1: Check Payment Gateway Status

Before anything else, check if Shopify Payments, Stripe or PayPal are experiencing outages. Go to Settings โ†’ Payments in your Shopify admin. If your gateway shows an error or warning, that's your problem โ€” it's a provider-side issue.

Also check the payment provider's status page. Shopify Payments outages are posted at shopifystatus.com.

Fix 2: Test in a Private/Incognito Window

Many checkout issues are browser-specific โ€” cached data, a blocked extension, or a stale session token. Open a private/incognito window and try the full checkout from scratch with a test product.

If it works in incognito, clear your main browser cache and cookies. If it only fails in one browser, it's a browser compatibility issue with a script or app.

Fix 3: Disable Recently Installed Apps

Shopify apps often inject JavaScript into the checkout. A recently installed app may be conflicting with the payment process. Disable apps one by one (start with the most recently installed) and test checkout after each one.

๐Ÿ’ก Pay special attention to upsell apps, cart modification apps and countdown timer apps โ€” these are the most common checkout script conflicts.

Fix 4: Check SSL Certificate

Shopify checkout requires a valid SSL certificate. If your domain recently changed, SSL can take 24โ€“48 hours to provision. Go to Settings โ†’ Domains and check if your SSL shows as active.

Some payment gateways (especially Stripe) will refuse connections over non-HTTPS or expired SSL.

Fix 5: Review Checkout Settings

In Settings โ†’ Checkout, check your customer account settings, email requirements and order processing settings. A mismatch between required fields and what your customer is providing can silently block checkout completion.

Fix 6: Check Shipping Rate Configuration

If customers can reach payment but the checkout won't proceed, often the issue is no shipping rates available for the customer's location. Go to Settings โ†’ Shipping and delivery and verify that shipping rates exist for the countries you're selling to.

Fix 7: Test with Shopify's Bogus Gateway

Enable the Bogus Gateway (Settings โ†’ Payments โ†’ Add payment method โ†’ Search "Bogus Gateway"). This lets you complete a real test transaction without charging anything. If Bogus Gateway works but your real gateway doesn't, the issue is with your payment provider configuration โ€” API keys, webhook URLs or account verification.

Fix 8: Check Payment Provider API Keys

Your payment gateway API keys can expire or become invalid. In Shopify Payments, Stripe or PayPal, verify:

  • API keys are current and haven't been rotated/revoked
  • Webhook endpoints point to the correct Shopify URL
  • Your payment account is fully verified (some accounts require identity verification)
  • You're using live keys in production (not test keys)
